Judge Doug Fahl receives JAG commission
Whitley County Judge and Lieutenant Colonel Doug Fahl will assume a new military judge role created by the Indiana National Guard beginning September 1, 2020, after he completed the 63rd Military Judge Course offered by The Judge Advocate General’s School on June 19. Judge Fahl will continue to serve as the Whitley Superior Court judge and fulfill his military judge duties on drill weekends. He will be based out of Joint Forces Headquarters in Indianapolis.
Judge Michael Barnes
Court of Appeals of Indiana Senior Judge Michael P. Barnes died after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was 72 years old.
Judge Barnes was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Indiana in May 2000 after long service as the St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney. He was retained on the Court by election in 2000 and 2012. Judge Barnes retired from the Court on June 15, 2018, and was appointed by the Indiana Supreme Court to serve as a Senior Judge for the Court of Appeals.
Judge Barnes received numerous awards for victim advocacy and supported a wide range of community organizations, especially those serving vulnerable populations.
Magistrate Michael Cox
Vanderburgh County Magistrate Michael John Cox, 54, died at his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Magistrate Cox attended Purdue University and the Claude W. Pettit College of Law, Ohio Northern University. He practiced law with his father, John Cox, at Cox & Cox Attorneys for 25 years. In 2015, he was appointed Vanderburgh Circuit Court Magistrate by Judge David Kiely.
During his career, he served on several community organizations, including the Vanderburgh County CASA, Centurion Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, and the Old Courthouse Preservation Society. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Laura, and five children and step-children.
Judge Ryan Johanningsmeier
Knox County Judge Ryan Johanningsmeier tragically passed away on August 29. He was 44 years old.
Judge Johanningsmeier graduated from Purdue University with highest distinction in 1997, and Indiana University Law School with honors in 2000. He began his law career in private practice before taking a position at the Indiana Attorney General’s Office. He was elected Judge of Knox County Superior Court II in 2014.
Judge Johanningsmeier was a dedicated member of his community. He is survived by his wife Kate and their two children, his parents, and two siblings.
Tobias center for leadership
The Indiana Supreme Court celebrates Fiscal manager Aaron Hood’s participation in the 15th class of fellows at The Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at Indiana University. The year-long fellowship program bridges the gap between knowledge and practice, so leaders feel empowered to foster people, organizations, and communities to solve complex issues. The center partners with the Kelley School of Business, Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, and O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University.
