“So what does the Community Relations Committee do anyway?”
As chair of the Community Relations Committee, I hear this question on a regular basis. And I’m always happy to let judges know of the important, yet quiet work that is done by the Committee.
One of the primary goals of the Community Relations Committee is to educate the public about the work done by Indiana’s judiciary. The Committee has worked to achieve this goal in a number of ways over the years, most recently partnering with Courts in the Classroom to recruit judges to participate in Constitution Day presentations to students.
Committee members proudly participate in this important initiative to improve Indiana’s civic health and encourage the judiciary to join in this effort.
The Committee’s other outreach project is the Judges Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau is designed to connect schools with volunteer judges to speak about courts and other law-related topics and to facilitate an understanding of the purpose and structure of Indiana’s judicial system. All judicial officers are welcome to join the Speakers Bureau.
Another goal of the Community Relations Committee is to foster understanding between courts and the media. The Bench and Media Guide to Interaction is a joint production of the Committee and the Hoosier State Press Association, and is intended as a quick reference for judges and journalists seeking information on issues involving courts and the media.
The Committee invites judges to check out this resource, suggest additional conten, and share with interested journalists.
The Community Relations Committee is hard at work behind the scenes helping to promote the fine work done by Indiana judges.
