Indiana CLEO Continues to Thrive

As law schools across the country face the possibility of decreased enrollment of first year law students, the Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity (ICLEO) Fellowship program continues on a progressive path of growth. In early April 2013, the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) reported 52,066 applicants to ABA-accredited law schools for the fall 2013 semester. While this represents a 15.9% decline in law school applicants from 2012, programming to ensure that racial minority, low-income, and other underrepresented students have the best opportunity to pursue a legal education if they so choose, remains critically important. Even as of 2010, the percentage of Black/African American and Hispanic students graduating from law schools remained well below their respective percentages of the U.S. population, according to 2010 population data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Not only does this confirm the continued relevance of the ICLEO program, but also it reinforces the need for continued innovation and a solid strategic direction for ICLEO.
Early this year, Chief Justice Brent E. Dickson designated Justice Loretta H. Rush as the Supreme Court’s liaison to ICLEO and Chair of the ICLEO Advisory Committee. Under the leadership of Justice Rush, the ICLEO Advisory Committee will begin a long-range and strategic planning initiative this summer. This initiative will focus on reaffirming a long-term vision for ICLEO. Reassessing the vision for ICLEO in a changing environment is necessary to ensure continuity and long-term success of the program. The Advisory Committee will engage in a series of discussions in hopes of proposing an innovative plan for continued success.
