Updated Roll of Attorneys website has new features

March 5, 2013

The Indiana Roll of Attorneys Website is used by the public, the press, organizations that hire attorneys, state agencies and others to get basic information about an attorney’s license, bar status, and disciplinary history. In January 2013, the Appellate Clerk’s Office replaced its decade-old Roll of Attorneys website with an improved version offering new features and information, as well as a fresh, easy-to-use design.

Search

When conducting a name search, users can enter both last and first name and city to narrow results, especially when searching for a common surname. The old site did not allow users to narrow by first name. Users can also now search by attorney number, which was previously unavailable.

Search Results

After conducting a search, users are presented with much more information than the previous site provided. The old site listed attorneys by name, with city and state included in the results. The new site still provides an alphabetical list of results by name with city and state, but also includes attorney number, admission date and license status. Further, the results can be sorted by any of these criteria.
Search results also include a notation for attorneys who have had a change of name or attorney number. For example, if you’re searching for an attorney named Sandy Day, but she’s changed her name to Sandy O’Connor, you’ll still be able to find her. When you search for her by last name “Day” she will appear in the results as “Sandy Day,” and her name will appear in italics. When you click on her record, her name will appear as “Sandy O’Connor” with a note about her previous name.

Attorney Records

Perhaps the greatest improvement to the Roll of Attorneys is the level of detail provided in the attorney records themselves. If the attorney has any pending or concluded matters filed by the Indiana Disciplinary Commission, the status and case numbers are listed and linked to the chronological case summary for those cases. In addition, the record now includes any other names or attorney numbers the attorney has practiced under in Indiana.
